August 1st: Set sail to Uglich.

Morning arrives and we set sail down the Moscow Canal then into the Vogue River. As we leave Moscow city the canal soon becomes tree lines with the occasional monastery tower appearing over the tree tops.

The Volga River is very wide at this point as a reservoir wall was built at Uglich as part of the Stalin's project in 1939.
As a result the 17th century St. Nicholas monastery was flooded but the bell tower of the church still stands 74 metres above the water level.

Uglich is just downstream of the reservoir so we first pass through a lock.

Uglich is a town which has been historically preserved. The grounds of its Kremlin  citadel surrounded the green-domed Transfiguration Cathedral, which has ornate wall icons. Close by , the Church of St. Dmitry on the Blood has vivid frescoes memorialising the death of 18th century leader Ivan the Terrible's son

Locals are allowed to make some money by inviting tourists to come to their house for a home cooked meal with food grown in their back yard. So tonight it was dinner with a local and traditional Russian food.
